As 2025 draws to a close, we’re feeling extra thankful for all of you—our amazing members who give so generously of your time, talents, and hearts. NDWC has so much to celebrate this season!
​In November, a big team of NDWC volunteers joined 1,200 others for the Rise Against Hunger event, helping to prepare an incredible 213,840 meals for families in Timor-Leste, an island north of Australia that faces severe food insecurity. We also came together at our monthly meeting to assemble Thanksgiving baskets for Second Story, one of this year’s beneficiaries. A huge thank-you to Heather Covington and Jamie Teufel for leading that effort and ensuring local families had a brighter holiday season.
Now, it’s time to celebrate you! We’re looking forward to kicking off the holidays at Karen Calpin’s home on December 9 for our annual Holiday Party. Don’t forget to bring your gift for the exchange and a bottle of wine or 6-pack. It’s always a joyful night of laughter and connection—just what we all need this time of year.
And before we know it, it’ll be January and time for Arts Night Out—one of our biggest fundraisers of the year! Mark your calendars for January 26 and plan to bring friends and spouses. It’s shaping up to be our best event yet, with an amazing silent auction, local art, and a fun night out to support our community programs. Please go to the website now and buy your tickets.

Arts Night Out
Fundraiser

Arts Night Out is one of NDWC’s most favorite traditions. It’s a wonderful evening to celebrate creativity, learn about inspiring and thought-provoking art, and take part in our always-popular silent auction featuring terrific offerings. Bring a friend along with you to this fun event.

Our Silent Auction is shaping up beautifully with special experiences, trips, tickets, and unique items from friends of NDWC and local partners. But we’re still collecting! Have a vacation home, a standout dining experience, or a cool behind-the-scenes opportunity you could offer? Let us know—email Jane or Melissa.

This year, the McLean Project for the Arts brings us two dynamic exhibits. MPA Artistic Director and Curator Nancy Sausser will lead us through Photogenesis, featuring works inspired by photographic images, ideas, and techniques.

We’ll also explore the Bernie Boston Retrospective, celebrating the life and work of longtime McLean resident and award-winning photojournalist Bernie Boston—the first African American member of the White House press corps. The Atrium Gallery will display standout photographs capturing defining moments from his remarkable career.

WHAT HAS NDWC BEEN UP TO?
​A recap of our recent activities

We had a fantastic November meeting and spent time creating baskets for Second Story for Thanksgiving, clipping some nature photos for the Falls Church-McLean Children's Center and of course tasting some great food from our Fall Bake-Off.  Definitely a fun and productive night.  Plus we got our new t-shirts.
NDWC had a great turn-out for Rise Against Hunger, a service event focused on fighting hunger. Kudos to Katie Hanusik for spearheading this fun and rewarding effort. And check out the new t-shirts!
We had a terrific Prospective Members' Meeting in October! Members and their guests heard from Ayce Ozerdem about stress reduction and self care -- and to learn more about NDWC. It was great to see new faces at our meeting. We hope you'll join us again! This lovely event was hosted by our Benefactor-level corporate sponsor, The Mather. Our special thanks go out to Rachel McLean of The Mather for her warmth and hospitality.



​A crew of NDWC members picked up trash along Westmoreland Street in October. Our Adopt-A-Highway program helps to keep our community and neighborhoods cleaner. Monica led the team on this project.
NDWC visited the Falls Church-McLean Children's Center to read to the kids and distribute books from Reading is Fundamental of Northern Virginia (RIF-NOVA) for them to take home. Thanks to Alisa for organizing this event.

Our vineyard voyagers had a beautiful day visiting different wineries in Loudon County. Here's a gorgeous photo of Melissa and Trish Kostelancik at one of the stops. Look out for more social activities for NDWC members coming this spring.
